Turkey Vulture

A large raptor that can soar for hours on warm air thermals without flapping its wings, it feeds on carrion, providing an important role in the ecosystem. Their red heads are featherless, which helps with cleanliness while dining. After summer, huge flocks will migrate all the way to South America.

Active seasons

Summer. Watch for large flocks “kettling” at the end of summer before flying south.

How/where to find

A large, soaring bird of the warmer months. Rarely flaps its wings, and holds them in a slight “V” position while gliding.

You can find the Turkey Vulture throughout every Region and Outpost on The BC Bird Trail!
