Managed by the Wild Bird Trust since 1993, the Maplewood Flats Conservation Area is an incredible example of collaborative conservation management. With over 300-acres spanning mudflats, salt marshes, mixed forest, rough grassland and freshwater marshes the site is host to more than 250 species throughout the year. Be sure to stop by the greeter hut on arrival to pick up a detailed map of the site and find out about the latest sightings at this bird watching paradise.

While it shares Cypress’ excellent vantage points for the fall raptor migration, the trails at this park can yield different species thanks to the Douglas Fir habitat present here. Hairy Woodpecker and Northern Flicker inhabit these forests, and it is always worth scanning the undergrowth for Grouse.

Whether you choose to undertake the famous Grouse Grind or opt for the scenic Skyride to make your way to the top, a visit to Grouse Mountain will impress with the incredible views of the city. Year round residents of the area include the Great-horned Owl, Bald Eagle, Chestnut-backed Chickadee and Sooty Grouse, so keep an eye out for them no matter what season you visit. Summertime allows access to a number of hiking trails where you may encounter some of the other 99 species in the area. Daily falconry displays occur during the summer months, be sure to check the website for timing.

During the summer months Cypress Provincial Park offers a number of hiking trails and lookouts from which to observe the over 120 species of bird that have been spotted in the park. Gray Jay’s are a firm favourite for visitors to the park, while other alpine species such as the Black and Vaux’s Swift are more elusive but still spectacular to spot. During fall, the high elevation and vantage points of the park provide an excellent view of migrating raptors such as Red-Tailed, Cooper’s and Sharp-shinned hawks. As you hike, the forests are busy with the sounds of vireos, flycatchers and warbler’s, and it is not uncommon to encounter a Sooty Grouse on your travels.

The village of Horseshoe Bay is worth a visit not only for its bustling centre with many shops, cafes and restaurants, but for the over 150 species of birds that have been spotted in the region year round.
